Dry shampoo is one of the best personal care items out there.

It is literally a single product that takes the place of more time consuming personal care acts- like showering and washing your hair AND it adds texture and volume. [All my ladies say, Amen!] There’s one pitfall to store bought shampoo though… it’s difficult to find one clean ingredients. Stress not, I have a cheap, quick, and easy recipe for homemade dry shampoo for you.

Have you ever looked at the ingredients of your dry shampoo? If you’re using aerosol dry shampoo, butane and propane are the first listed ingredients. Uhm.. no thank you, this stuff goes on my scalp like, every other day. Conventional, store bought dry shampoo also contains artificial fragrances and preservatives. Fragrances can contain thousands of harmful  mystery ingredients (that aren’t listed due to “proprietary laws”). Phthalates often hide under the name “fragrance” as a preservative and is linked to low sperm count, birth defects (especially in the reproductive organs), infertility and some cancers. Here’s a fun PDF outlining the dangers of phthalates and cosmetic products.

I am constantly trying to lower my exposure to harmful ingredients and switching to DIY dry shampoo is a virtually effortless way to do so. Plus, you’ll save some cash doing it.

DIY Dry Shampoo:

For light hair:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Arrowroot Powder
  • Preferred container (mason jar, old jelly jar)

Directions:

  1.  Measure 1/4 cup Arrowroot Powder and pour into your preferred container
  2. While leaning over the sink or tub: Dust the powder into your roots with your fingertips or an old or cheap makeup brush. Paint brushes could work too. Use what you’ve got.

For dark hair:

Do Better Blog + 2 ingredient dry shampoo

DIY Dry Shampoo for dark hair colors. Cocoa powder keeps the tint dark and your dirty hair secret safe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp Arrowroot powder
  • 2 Tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Preferred container (mason jar, old jelly jar)

Directions:

  1.  Mix the powders.
  2.  While leaning over the sink or tub: Dust the powder into your roots with your fingertips or an old or cheap makeup brush. Paint brushes could work too. Use what you’ve got.

Substitutions:

  • You can successfully use unsweetened cocoa powder without the Arrowroot powder but the Arrowroot really does a great job at absorbing the oils.
  • Cornstarch can be substituted for Arrowroot powder but I personally prefer Arrowroot powder.

Where to find the ingredients:

You can find both, Arrowroot powder and unsweetened cocoa powder at bulk food stores like Winco, Sprouts, and Natural Grocers.

Bobs Red Mill also sells Arrowroot powder which is usually in the baking or natural foods section at the grocery store.
